Can I practice before my Ropes Screen?
Last updated: October 26, 2026
Yes. You can practice before your Ropes screen in two ways. Practice is never scored.
Practice is optional. Nothing you do while practicing counts toward your result. Video screens don't have practice tests.

Take the optional practice test
Open your screening invite and go through the steps until you reach Take a Practice Test (Optional).
Select Click this link to take a practice test. It opens in a new tab.
Work through the short sample. It matches your screen type, such as coding, written, or SQL.
Submit when you are done, then close the tab and return to your screen.
What to know:
The practice test is not scored or recorded. Your practice results are not shared with the employer.
It does not ask for ID verification, camera, or screen recording. Your real assessment may.
You get one practice test per invite.
It ends once you start your real assessment or your invite expires.
Use the practice time in your assessment
Hands-on assessments start with a short practice period. Video screens do not.
Select Start on your assessment.
Practice for about 5 minutes on a sample problem. Use the file explorer, editor, terminal, and chat assistant to get comfortable.
Watch the practice timer in the footer.
When time runs out, you move into your real assessment automatically. You can also select Start Screen if you finish early.
You can't pause the assessment, even during practice.
Practice is not scored.
Once you start your real assessment, you can't go back to practice.
If your assessment includes a live presentation, it starts with a practice question that isn't saved.
